da dobrowin: With the U’s sitting in seventh position in the very competitive League Two, there was need for strengthening in the current side to maintain the current lofty position. It is no surprise then that is has been a busy month at the Kassam Stadium, as the revolving door has seen no less than six players leave and three come in.
Chris Wilder has brought in Oli Johnson and Mark Wilson until the end of the season, while Scott Rendell has come in from Wycombe on loan, also for the duration of the season.
Johnson arrives as a free agent after his contract with Norwich was terminated by mutual consent. He can play up front or on the wing which will give the side more versatility upfront. The former Scunthorpe trialist made quite an impact on his debut when he came off the bench to almost grab the winner against Hereford and he also featured in our draw to Burton Albion at the weekend.
Another new arrival is Rendell who was a late signing on deadline day and his spell at the club should go some way to provide the side with the extra firepower they need up-front. He was impressive at Wycombe during their promotion campaign last year and we can hope that he will have a similar impact on the Kassam Stadium. The 25-year-old 6-foot striker said: “To join a club of this stature and a club that is going places is fantastic. I can link the play a bit, bring others into play and hopefully at the end of it, score a few goals.”
The other signing on deadline day was Mark Wilson, a tough tackling midfielder who was another free agent. The 32-year-old started his career at Manchester United and during his career he has had notable spells at Middlesbrough and, more recently in South Yorkshire with Doncaster Rovers. All three new players should be in contention to play against Barnet on Saturday with Rendell strongly tipped to make his debut.
The six players who have departed the club include Deane Smalley, Adam Chapman, and Josh Payne who have all gone out on loan until the end of the season. While Simon Clist and Ben Purkiss have both departed to League Two rivals Hereford and Steve Kinniburgh has left the club after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.
A particularly busy transfer window for the club but it is back to the real action on Saturday as we face Barnet at home. After a run of three games without a victory we really need to keep pace on our play-offs rivals and gain three vital points. Let’s hope our new signings can make all the difference.
