da cassino: Sir Alex Ferguson vetoed Fabio Capello’s decision to take Owen Hargreaves to the World Cup and it was the right decision.
Prior to coming on as a substitute in the 92nd minute in Manchester United’s penultimate game of the season against Sunderland, Hargreaves hadn’t made a first team appearance for United since 2008 and he has missed 113 matches in 20 months. Despite him being a decent player, is Hargreaves really that good and that vital that England need to call him up despite hardly any match practice?
Also it wouldn’t be fair to other players in the England squad who have worked so hard this season to earn their place in the team. If for instance Hargreaves had been selected ahead of James Milner who has had a fantastic season for Aston Villa then that would have been a ridiculous decision. Allegedly the player who was to miss out at the expense of Hargreaves was Manchester City’s Gareth Barry who is definitely a key player for England. Although he also has an injury problem he could overcome it in time for the World Cup and has played all season for Man City and in almost every England game under Fabio Capello.
Ferguson told Capello that Hargreaves was a long way from being able to compete at the highest level which prompted Capello to omit him from the squad. If anybody knows what levels their players are at the Fergie would know better than anybody so his word would mean a lot. With injury problems plaguing Hargreaves for the majority of his Man United career, and with him now being 29 years of age, there will be a lot of scrutiny on Hargreaves as to whether he still has what it takes to play for a club like Manchester United.
Hopefully Hargreaves will be able to completely overcome his injury problems once and for all and get back to being the player that he is. But for now he just needs to focus on getting fit again and having a good season for Manchester United. Undoubtedly a good player, next season could prove pivotal for Hargreaves’ career, should he be able to establish himself again in United’s first team then he will have a good few years left at the top. If he moves on in the summer or can’t get back in the team then your fear that his career will only go downhill from there.
