da cassino: Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure at Leeds United has been nothing short of a turbulent ride but also one with more ups than downs. Bielsa is many things but certainly not a bad manager, and fans know and appreciate him even after their shortcomings against Frank Lampard’s Derby.
Ex-Leeds man Vinnie Jones has given the fans exactly what they needed after a tough defeat at the end of a successful season – reassurance.
The words of wisdom
Jones has faced the crowd talking on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast Show on Monday morning as he discussed the still unresolved future of Bielsa as Leeds manager.
Apart from giving the fans his own stance on the matter, the ex-Leeds hardman’s words are certain to hit home in this rather gloomy time for the club and its fanbase.
Jones addressed other potential candidates to take over the position if the opportunity arises but was also rather quick to dismiss them entirely, stating that the fans are quite happy with what they’ve got at the moment:
“I’m on the forum with the Leeds United trust and they sent him [Bielsa] a great letter saying what a good job he’s done, but we fell short again this season.
“There are other big names around, Big Sam is being punted about, but from what I read Leeds fans are quite happy with Bielsa and I don’t think there’s going to be a change this summer.”
Watch Derby’s players bring the banter in the video below after beating Leeds but will they still be laughing after the play-off final?
Hope moving forward
It’s quite understandable that both the fans and Bielsa are uncertain of what the future holds, especially after falling short yet again, which Jones was quick to point out. But there’s also a sliver of light at the end of the tunnel and Vinnie has, intentionally or unintentionally, provided it for the fans who might doubt if the there’s hope moving forward.
What he says is quite true – the fans seem to be happy, and this respect and satisfaction flows both ways as Leeds need Bielsa as much as Bielsa needs Leeds. At this point it’s rather easy to conclude the eccentric manager might be looking for a way out of the Championship and possibly to new heights in the Premier League but why put your legendary status under threat when you are seemingly close to greatness exactly where you are now?
Sure, he might be tempted by a more lucrative contract somewhere else but Bielsa has always been, in many ways, a people’s man. Jones’ words are not a prophecy but they are definitely the kind Leeds’ fans are eager and need to hear right now.
