da betsul: Spurs kept the pressure up on their title rivals with a 3-2 win over West Ham on Saturday.
da dobrowin: After seeing Spurs a goal ruled out for offside in the early exchanges, the travelling Hammers fans might have felt they were going to be on the end of a hiding but, in truth, it was an even contest.
Michail Antonio, as he so often has this season, scored with his head to give his team the lead and it was no less than they deserved as half-time arrived.
Spurs came out with a fresh sense of purpose in the second half, however, and quickly got back into the game through Harry Winks’ strike – but found themselves behind once again towards full time.
Manuel Lanzini coolly finished off a penalty in front of the away fans and that looked to be the decider until Harry Kane hit two late goals to maintain Spurs’ unbeaten start to the season.
A great game, then, and here are five images to help sum it all up…
West Ham were feeling good
This was arguably West Ham’s best performance of the season up until the 89th minute as they executed Slaven Bilic’s plan to near perfection. The men from east London followed the Croatian’s every word and took their chances at the right time as well as seeing out pressure from Spurs. In the end, they were the masters of their own downfall and Bilic now needs to earn his wages in picking the side up in time for their next Premier League clash.
Pochettino left dumbfounded
Put simply, West Ham and Slaven Bilic outfoxed Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino for most of the game. The Lilywhites were at a bit of a disadvantage from the outset because they had to adopt a new formation in light of injuries, with Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen playing together up top, and it wasn’t until midfielder Dele Alli came on for the Dutchman that things began to work as normal. The Argentine will need to think of ways to introduce tactical flexibility.
A battle at The Lane
It wasn’t a bad-tempered game but it certainly was physical as Harry Kane would attest to here. The two sides both went out to try and win the game fro the start, which made a pretty captivating spectacle for supporters and neutrals alike. It did get too physical at one stage for Mike Dean’s liking, however, as he gave a penalty to West Ham after Vincent Janssen was spotted grappling with Winston Reid in the box – something the man in black has been very hot on this season.
A sign of the future
When the ball broke for Harry Winks in a relatively open net there was only going to be one outcome. The youngster only got the nod with Spurs suffering from a number of injuries ahead of this fixture, but put in a pretty decent individual performance. He took his goal well and was neat enough which will, hopefully for him, earn some more game time in the future. Spurs have a wealth of talent in midfield but you could see how important it was for the fans that Winks scored.
Kane seals it
Mike Dean awarded a penalty for a clumsy challenge from Havard Nordtveit on Heung-Min Son in stoppage time. The referee was spot on too, especially at such a crucial stage of the game, and West Ham can’t really have too many complaints about the decision. England international Harry Kane stepped up and confidently dispatched his strike into the bottom left corner, leaving Hammers ‘keeper Darren Randolph no chance and ensuring the most dramatic of finishes.
